 Virtual Domestic Violence Shelter Tour

Maria is calling a domestic violence shelter

The first step is making the phone call. Maria will be asked questions similar to the following to determine her needs:

  • Are you in a safe place to talk?
  • Are you safe right now-Do you need police or medical assistance right now?
  • If you are requesting shelter now, you will be asked about medical history, domestic violence history, and a variety of questions to determine that the program will suit your needs.
  • Pets: If you have pets, the shelter staff can assist you to ensure your pets are safe if you leave your home.
  • Do you have transportation to get to the shelter?
  • Do you need assistance with transportation?
  • If you have time, follow the safety plan (hot-link to safety plan).
  • You may be referred to another shelter for lack of bed-space, or because there may be another shelter location that may be safer for you.

Some other information regarding shelter programs:

  • Most shelters are open 24 hours a day 7 days a week
  • There may be a curfew for residents’ safety
  • Shelter can be provided for short-term emergency-or longer stays.
  • You will be asked to bring any necessary medication
  • Bring certain personal belongings
  • Bring your personal identification
  • Bring something of comfort for the child; maybe a favorite teddy bear
