 Virtual Domestic Violence Shelter Tour

Shelter staff will greet you, and will support you in identifying your needs. They may ask you the following questions:

  • Is there any thing that you or your child needs right away?
  • Paperwork will be completed asking about the dynamics in your relationship and if you have any injuries to be treated.
  • What about school for your children? Most shelters work closely with the local schools to prevent interruption of their education. You will discuss with staff whether you should switch schools to protect the child’s safety.
  • What about childcare for your children if you have to attend to services for the family, are seeking employment or already are employed? Daycare may be provided on-site, or staff will assist you in accessing resources in the community to meet childcare needs.
  • You will be asked to sign some standard forms.

Shelter staff will discuss some general guidelines necessary for keeping you and the other residents’ safe. Examples of such guidelines are:

  • Confidentiality of the shelter and its residents
  • The shelter is a drug and alcohol free environment
  • The shelter is a violence and weapon free safe home

Shelter staff will also discuss the following:

  • You will have the opportunity to meet with shelter staff and other residents to gain support and information
  • All residents work together to maintain their living quarters
  • You will retain responsibility for supervising your own children

In addition you will be provided:

  • Your rights as a resident
  • Your rights as a crime victim
  • Grievance procedures
